Found and Folded: Accordion-style Artist Book Workshop

Combine poetry and visual art by collaging found objects and words into a small, hardcover accordion-style artist book

In this workshop, you will explore how artists use books as a medium of expression and how words and imagery are a powerful combination.

All materials will be provided, however, if there are any personal paper supplies that you'd like to bring (postcards, tickets, specialty papers, etc.), feel free to do so. All levels of experience are welcome.

About the Artist

Katie Mielens holds a bachelor's degree from Central Michigan University in Art, Art History, and Museum Studies and her master's degree from Michigan State University in Arts, Cultural Management & Museum Studies. Since 2014, Katie has worked as a K-12 teaching artist and educator at various schools, museums, theaters, and arts nonprofits nationwide. These include Tacoma Art Museum and Art With Heart in Washington State, Cranbrook Art Museum in Bloomfield Hills, MI, Discovery World in Milwaukee, WI, and a two-year teaching artist residency in rural North Carolina. Her creative work was featured in a 2016 solo exhibition, Duality of Existence, at CMU’s Park Library, and was most recently exhibited in the 2024 Illustrated Accordion Exhibition at the Kalamazoo Book Arts Center. Katie is a scenic charge artist and the show photographer for Pit & Balcony Theatre, and the Education & Museum Services Manager at the Saginaw Art Museum & Gardens.
